planning area

Visual and physical access to the Arno river banks have been gradually
limited by water regulation and wall building so that for tourists
and Florentines alike the only connection to the river is in the
historic centre along the Lungarno, the street that runs alongside.
The famous Passeggiata, which borders a stretch of the river in
the Cascine Park, is a wide asphalted promenade with no direct contact
to the

We chose this area for our experiment, at present only used by fishermen,
joggers or dog owners. |
This project
would provide an opportunity to restore the fragile environment of the
Arno river: an extraordinary resource, presently hidden between its banks,
which could be an attractive recreation and pleasure spot reunited with
its city..
The
pilot project for the city of Florence is referred to a significant stretch
along the riverbank in the Parco delle Cascine and it includes the following
interventions:

The level portion of lawn along Viale Washington is currently in
a poor state of preservation. The excessive growth of grass varieties
is noticeable, as they are not mowed by regular interventions, leading
to the diffusion of undesirable species. This state of things makes
it impossible for the users to stop or take walks here. Near the
stretch closer to the riverbank, the soil is highly tamped, which
causes the total loss of grass, mainly due to the transit bicycles
and pedestrians. In time, in fact, a sort of "track" has
formed that invites cyclists to use this space instead of Viale
Washington or its access road. The deep tracks left by the machines
used for the yearly mowing operations are also noticeable.
On the Parco delle Cascine side, there are some large Populus Alba
planted in a tier. On the riverbank edge, some young plants of Robinia
Pseudoacacia, also planted in a tier.
|
|
The final objective is to obtain a large lawn space that can be
used exclusively by pedestrians, for walks and to stop outdoor near
the Arno course.
An itinerary has not been proposed by choice, as the area already
presents a sufficient road network (Viale Washington and its access
road), while it lacks wide grassy areas near the river for outdoor
activities. This choice may also divert part of the load already
weighing inside the Parco delle Cascine, by offering the users an
area with visual features undoubtedly interesting even though not
as stimulating from an historical point of view. Project simulation
of results expected from interventions to the lawn on top of the
riverbank.

The riverbank stretch concerned by the intervention, which is situated
on the right side of the river, has such a section that direct access
to the river course is not possible without using the ramps for
hydraulic maintenance.
The grass cover does not seem to undergo regular maintenance. In
fact, during the hot seasons, grass can grow so high that any use
of the area is discouraged.
Hydraulic maintenance interventions are carried out in the area
concerned by way of mowing without any selection of the natural
riparian species, thus preventing the growth of isolated trees or
of low-density tree formations.
The riverbank foot is subject to lateral erosion phenomena that
could worsen with the development of leisure navigation, which would
increase the transversal wave motion that is responsible of such
events.
|
|
The final objective is that of obtaining a lawn treed with riverbank
vegetable species of different ages that would increase autonomously
through preservation and growth of young plants that are naturally
reproduced. The maximum density of this topsoil that is be compatible
with the current river hydraulic management would be of at least
15 ml distance between each trunk.
Levelling of the riverbank near the Arno watercourse is required,
with a slope of about 10% and a transversal development of about
5 m. such intervention allows the reduction of erosion processes
without intervening with heavy and costly operations, which would
not be very appropriate for the dynamics of this stretch of the
river.
The average transversal width of the riverbank and the inclination
that characterise it suggest the realization of two tracks with
a section of 3,50 ml that could be used both for the riverbank management
and for leisure.

This area, placed in the proximity of the bank access ramp in the
riverbed, seems to be the only stretch of the park area allowing
access to the riverbed. It is an area with a light slope, partly
grassy and partly covered by gravel from the river deposits that
are due to the river course being slowed down by the weir upstream.
|
|
The area outside the riverbank remodelling interventions, only a
re-outlining of the ground in order to reduce the greater irregularities
to favour the formation of a more homogenous vegetation hat would
subsequently be more easily accessed. Such interventions do not
concern surfaces with deposits of gravel or pebbles directly in
contact with the water, where no alteration is required.
