One of the RiverLinks project final goals is to promote the exchange of information between European cities that developed in different geographical contexts.
For this reason, each Partner has carried out a research on European cities that are interested in solving problems of the river-city relationship in the urban scope.
The contribution from Florence is based on the study of cases concerned with Dusseldorf, Graz, Hamburg and London:

1. - Dusseldorf -

Media Docks

2. - Graz -

Kulturhauptstadt Graz 03

3. - Hamburg -

4. - London -

Media Docks

"The development of a new riverbank promenade on top of the new riverbank tunnel and a new marina in the media docks next to the old city linking it to the Rhine and, via the parliament building and theatre, to the marina in the media docks.
To relink the city and the river and to connect the Altstadt and Rhine as well as offices and the media docks.

Dusseldorf has a restored friendly pedestrian waterfront. The lifestyle of the city is ahead of its competitors again in North Rhine Westfalia.
A success story for the citizens and the tourists. The tunnel project was rather expensive being so close to the river. The development gives Dusseldorf the image of an international city with many new lifestyle qualities."

Kulturhauptstadt Graz 03

"Graz is the second biggest city of Austria and the capital city of the Steiermark situated in a valley of the Alps, with 240.000 inhabitants. UNESCO World Heritage protects the old city below the castle hill and next to the river Mur. The old city has many squares and restaurants and is popular with tourists from all over the world.
It has an important university, a school of architecture and many cultural facilities such as museums, theatres, opera, parks and a botanical garden.
To relink the city and the river and to connect the old city with the Mur by means of a new pedestrian bridge, an artificial island (Architect Acconci) and a new museum of arts "The big bubble" (Architect Peter Cook)."

HafenCity

"When the harbour functions moved out of "Speicherstadt", the old island with its brick warehouses in front of the old city, it could be developed for urban use.To relink the city and river with 5.500 residential units for 12.000 people and more than 40.000 work places plus restaurants, retail and leisure facilities, parks and open spaces.
Like the new German capital Berlin in the 1990s, Hamburg is now one of the most interesting construction sites in Europe with its development visible to citizens and tourists alike. The transformation of the old warehouses is still in progress and there are a lot of new buildings for mixed use development."

Canary Wharf Docklands

"To create a world class riverfront for citizens and tourists and to connect it to the old city centre; to enlarge the city centre and relink the city with the river Thames; to combine the old financial centre in the city of London with a new one in the docklands; to find and provide more space for offices and housing close to the city centre."
